- <p> DIED. Bob Crosby, 79, swing bandleader. In the late '30s and
- early '40s, Crosby's "Bobcats" offered souped-up arrangements of
- New Orleans jazz that became known as Dixieland Swing. The
- distinctive two-beat sound propelled hits like Big Noise from
- Winnetka. Jazz bible Down Beat magazine dubbed the Bobcats "the
- most interesting band in America."
